Edinburgh band Althing is a collection of musicians from Scandinavia, the British Isles and Eastern Eurpoe, who explore new combinations of tradition. With an intriguing line-up of 3 vocalists and 3 multi-instrumentalists, Althing bring together 6 musical styles and 6 languages yet create 1 dynamic and authentic sound.

Golda Fischer - Vocals/Whistle
Half-Hungarian, half-German Golda was born in Munich and brought up in Hamburg. After studying music history at the Liszt academy in Budapest and singing/theatre studies in Rome in 1998/99 Golda moved to Edinburgh to study linguistics. Joining althing was the perfect way to combine her two passions: languages and music. Together with Maria, she also sings with the local band Bothy Tam's.

Aaron Jones - Bouzouki / Guitar / Bass Aaron was born in Poole in England and has been playing bouzouki since the age of 16. For the last ten years he has been performing and recording worldwide with artists such as Craobh Rua, Seelyhoo, The Sandy Brechin Band, Iron Horse, Keep It Up, Burach, Dibidil, Davy Steele and Urbn Ri. He has performed onstage with bands such as The Boys of the Lough, Moving Cloud, Flook, Phil Cunningham, Aly Bain, Deaf Shepherd, Fred Morrison and Carlos Nunez. He also plays in a duo with Claire Mann.

Thoko Kamwendo - Vocals
Born in Malawi (Africa) Thoko was brought up in Sweden. Finding an interest in singing from a young age she has been involved with music performance for most of her life, singing with Örebro based choir Musical Linjen and Swedish rock bands Fudge and Alderon. She moved to Edinburgh in 1999 to study religion and before joining althing was singing with local band The Rains.

Greg Borland - Fiddle/Bass
Greg hails from Inverness. He started playing the fiddle at the age of 9 under the instruction of Donald Riddell and later by the legendary Scottish fiddler Hector MacAndrew of Aberdeen. Greg was Scottish champion on a number of occasions in his youth. Also an accomplished bass player, he played both instruments in Caledon, Davy Steele's supergroup and also The Kathryn Tickell Band. Since 1997 he has been touring extensively with Burach.

Maria Johansen - Vocals/Flute/Whistles
Born in Tromsø, North Norway, Maria began folk dancing at the age of 7 and started playing the clarinet 2 years later. However after joining her local folk society at 16 she took up Norwegian folk flutes and later began studying folk music at Rauland in Telemark. She has also studied singing under Agnes Buen Garnås. Maria moved to Edinburgh to finish her degree which she completed in 2000. After completing her MBA in Culture Management at Queen Margaret's College, Maria started the yearly Northern Streams festival in Edinburgh with Ewan.

Ewan MacPherson - Guitar/Mandola/Vocals
Born in Liverpool Ewan completed a ND in music at Wrexham and was one of the first ever intake of students studying for MA at Paul McCartney's LIPA. He has worked with many different artists including: John Spiers (Spiers & Bowden), Burach, Cantrip, Croft no 5, Alasdair White (Battlefield Band) and Ben Farmer (Chouchenn) Ewan currently plays with amongst others Fine Friday, Fribo with vocalist Anne Sofie Linge Valdal (Jim Sutherlands Cold Weather Dancing) and fiddler Sarah-Jane Fifield. He has just completed an album with contemporary Scottish band the unit, (with Amy Geddes and Paul Jennings) which has received play on radio Scotland. An active member of the Edinburgh session scene Ewan is becoming recognized as one of Scotland's most versatile multi-instrumentalists.
